The
Benefits of Massage Therapy
The benefits of massage therapy ranges from various aspects
depending on what technique the therapist is using and what
structure the therapist is manipulating to determine the
effect the therapist wants to achieve. The following lists
the different techniques, their definition and what structure/system
they have an effect on.
- Effleurage- A gliding manipulation primarily effecting
circulation (blood and lymph nodes).
- Petrissage- The creation of a pump by alternate pressure
and relaxation. The different types are: kneading, muscle
squeezing, pickups, wringing and skin rolling. It effects
the circulation, the muscle tone, and the skin (by helping
to alleviate adhesions)

- Tapotement- A percussive manipulation. There are 9 different
types ranging from light to heavy pressures. This technique
stimulates the nerves, loosens tissues, loosens adhering mucous
from the lungs and promotes drainage from the lungs.
- Shaking- A limb or the thorax and abdomen is gently grasped
and shaken. This procedure helps the body to realize where the
limb is in relation to the body. It helps to increase the range
of motion of a limb. Also, it may increase the circulatory and
digestive systems.
- Stroking- A reflex manipulation used to change the nerve
firing rate and either increase or decrease muscle tone. It
can be used when using pressure is not allowed.
- Vibrations- A tremulous movement creating a reflex response.
Responses can vary from nerves being stimulated or soothed,
decreasing muscle tone, loosening adhering mucous and increasing
local circulation.
- Frictions- Are either specific, circular or transverse movements
affecting the circulation and soft tissues. Also helps to align
fibers.
By using a variety of the above Swedish Massage Techniques,
the therapist may be able to work the skin and muscles to manipulate
them so they will be more pliable. Releasing the tension that
the muscles may be holding gives a great feeling for the client.
Also, by increasing the blood circulation to the cellular level
aids in providing the cell with new nutrients so it can work better;
but it also allows the cell to eliminate it's wastes thus helping
the body to detoxify itself.
